Passage from Deliver Me from Nowhere:

"To hear Bruce Springsteen in such an intimate way, no drums, very simple instrumentation, was surprising," Berninger recalled. "It was like, 'What? What is this? Can you do this?' It wasn't just the fact that it was a magical record in terms of its scenes and characters. It was the idea that a major rock star could make something just in his bedroom. [...]"

About me: Hi, my name is Alice. I’m a Malaysian-Swedish polyglot and book blogger living in Huskvarna, Sweden. I moved to Sweden from Singapore with my (Singaporean) cat, Mister Pops, in August 2021.

I’m semi-retired, and when I’m not working, I read, sketch, indulge in photography, and experiment with foreign languages. I speak English, Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, and some Italian. My Swedish is steadily improving. I’m also the founder of Huskvarnas Kattvakt.

Listening to vinyl on my 1980s Mitsubishi DP-200 is one of my favourite pastimes. My small but cherished collection includes a standout favourite: the In The Mood For Love Soundtrack (花樣年華). In December 2023, I added a 1930s HMV 102 gramophone to the mix, and in early 2025, I picked up a secondhand 2015 Crosley Cruiser portable turntable.

About the blog: My virtual home, which started as aliceteh.com in 2005, has evolved into alicetehlarsson.se. It is now more than 20 years old! I created it to share my love for books, art, music, beautiful sentences, and creative musings. At times, I write in British English and at times, American English.

Warren Zanes’s Deliver Me from Nowhere traces the making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, following the songwriter’s restless search for truth in stripped-down stories. Part biography, part cultural history, it blends interviews, close listening, and scene-setting to show how a lo-fi demo became a defining statement of American loneliness and resolve.
